A Nice Problem To Have

Got this in an email on June 10th concerning the class I am teaching on June 12th:

Due to overwhelming response our Wed. June 12 Business & Social Media SBC Seminar has been relocated to a larger computer lab.

Please see the attached flier with room change notation.

The instructor (copied on this message) and all students are being contacted about the change. If you have an opportunity to make this change on Channel 21, I would certainly appreciate it.

Much thanks,

Kathy

The Social Media Revolution is here!

Are you ready?

-

Social Filtering

– being able to align what publishers and advertisers want to show with what users want to see.

Viral Marketing

– using pre-existing social networks to achieve marketing objectives.

(viral – 1. a message intended to be spread     2. a virus)
– three components – the message, the medium, the delivery.

1.The message – it must stick!
2.The medium – images, video, text
3.The delivery –email, instant message, telephone, etc.

-

Items we will discuss:

Communication:

Blogging -Posting on your blog site.

Social Networking -

College students don’t email. They tweet about what they are doing and they send messages via Facebook

Facebook -

Greatest growth in the 35-49 age group. Over 200 million worldwide are logged in at this moment.

Facebook is an ideal medium for viral marketing.

Businesses are moving from a one sided “build it and hope they will come” model to a partnership with their target model.

LinkedIn -

a business-oriented social networking site. Founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003

“Build it and they will come”

This doesn’t work in social media. Give them a reason to visit. Give them a reason to return.

Business learns what customers want

Yesterday – focus groups

Today – return communication from customers and potential customers

More accurate and less time to implement

My focus is currently on:

1.    My blogs
2.    Facebook
3.    Twitter
4.    YouTube

Monday night I will be teaching Business and Social Media at South Piedmont Community College. This is an introductory class to teach business owners and managers how social media will impact their businesses.

The course is from 6pm to 9pm on November 9th. I will begin the class introducing the power of the blog. Blogging is changing the concept of business involvement with clientele. A business can elect to stay out of the social media arena. In that case it will loose control of what is being said about it in the marketplace. Or, a business can embrace the opportunity to get constructive feedback from customers. Blogging is ideal for this.

I will also cover micro-blogging (Twitter) and social networking (Facebook). Individuals are becoming more closely connected with people through these services. In many cases they are becoming friends again with people they have not seen in years. This form of contact creates an opportunity for businesses.

When discussing business and social media, Twitter will often be part of the conversation. One of the most common questions I am asked is “How can a business use Twitter?” Take a look at the twitter pages of  Starbucks Coffee, Home Depot, and Carnival Cruise. Those will give you an idea of what is going on between these successful companies and their social media contacts.

I will also discuss the use of multimedia by businesses. YouTube has created a new and efficient method for businesses to communicate with their customers.

If you have any questions, please give me a call at 704-438-2910.
